It's a busy day at the end of a busy month, Faith, but you (like I am) are probably a little tired of random-feeling, largely unspecific emails asking for money from tons of groups. So, I wanted to send you a longer email telling you what we have been up to this month and at the end, if you are willing, ask if you will consider donating.
The first week of April, I started going to Pennsylvania to meet with young people at Penn State to talk about the importance of voting and running for office. Then in the middle of the week Kevin, the co-founder of Leaders We Deserve, and I were working on helping one of our candidates find a campaign manager now that their budget enabled them to do so. Then, Advisory Board Member, congressional candidate, and hero, Harry Dunn happened to be near our office, so we caught up with him and chatted about how his race was going.
The second week of April, I went to New Hampshire to debate a Libertarian gun rights activist on gun control at Dartmouth. I also discussed running for office with some young people in NH, where Leaders We Deserve is planning some endorsements soon. I also got to celebrate my birthday (thanks to all of you who donated)!
The third week of April, I went to Houston to work with our endorsed candidate, Molly Cook, who is running for TX State Senate against someone who voted to not only arm teachers but give them $25,000 for doing so. If elected, Molly would be the youngest person in the State Senate and the most progressive. With Molly, I launched the largest canvas of the campaign, with over 45 people knocking doors with us, and hosted a fundraiser that raised nearly $10,000. Next, we went to Atlanta to work with Leaders We Deserve endorsed candidate, Bryce Berry — who would be the youngest person in the state legislature and the first ever public school teacher in the legislature. We hosted a fundraiser with Bryce that raised over $15,000 for his race. The next day, I spoke at the Cobb County Democratic Gala about the importance of not giving up on the South and the legacy of incredible leaders who have come out of Georgia.
In the last week of April, we went to Orlando, Florida, to officially endorse Nate Douglas for his run in one of the most competitive seats for the Florida state legislature. Nate is a climate activist and, at 23 years old, would be the youngest in the state legislature. Kevin and I spent the rest of the week working on our next slate of endorsements. One of which, we were calling to let him know we were endorsing, and he texted to say "Sorry I can't talk right now, repealing the abortion ban in my state." Rest assured, we got him on the phone the next day and let him know we were endorsing.
I know this email was long, but I just wanted to let you know what we have been up to! And more than anything, say thank you. Thank you for believing in Leaders We Deserve and helping make the dream of bringing in the next generation of Leaders a reality. We have a LOT of work to do and a long way to go but everyday I do this work, I feel something I often haven't in the past — hope. And I know if I am feeling hopeful, we are on the right path.
I'm so thankful that I asked our team to set up a system where I can call some of you to thank you personally. But we do need help to meet our end-of-month goal.
