Ten years ago, Colorado and Washington became the first U.S. states to legalize the use and sale of recreational marijuana. Since then, the prohibition of cannabis has thankfully been reversed in a total of 24 states and the District of Columbia. On top of that, 17 additional states have legalized marijuana for medicinal use.
But at the federal level, marijuana remains a Schedule I drug, like heroin or LSD, meaning possession can carry misdemeanor charges and penalties like jail time.1
