Trump's pardons are disgraceful and dictatorial

Mere hours after being sworn in as president for the second time, Donald Trump pardoned (or commuted the sentences of) essentially everyone who had been convicted of or was still being investigated for crimes as part of his attempted coup d'etat on January 6, 2021.

With these disgraceful and dictatorial pardons, Trump has in effect given MAGA extremists license to commit political violence in his name without fear of legal accountability.

Even among the nonstop litany of Trump travesties, these unjustified pardons stand out as egregiously chilling and tyrannical.

Now, let's talk about Pam Bondi, Trump's pick to be our nation's next Attorney General.

Here's what Bondi said just last week — during a Senate hearing over her nomination — when asked if people convicted of violently assaulting police officers on January 6 should be pardoned:

"Let me be very clear in speaking to you — I condemn any violence on a law enforcement officer in this country."

Again, Bondi said that just five days before Trump let 1,500 of his fellow insurrectionists, including those convicted of attacking police officers, out of jail in a brazen and unprecedented act of totalitarianism.

A message for Pam Bondi:

One week ago, you told the United States Senate and the American people that you believe violence against law enforcement personnel is unacceptable. Surely you are unwilling to serve as Attorney General — the chief law enforcement official in the country — under the man who just let hundreds of people who attacked police officers out of prison and back onto the streets. You should speak out against Donald Trump's unconscionable and dangerous pardons. And you should withdraw your name from consideration to serve as Attorney General in his administration.

Thanks for taking action.
