Dear Faith, We've never seen an election like this: voting turnout set to break records, a global pandemic, and more absentee ballots cast than ever before. Fueled by this uncertainty, our democracy itself could be at risk. But your job isn't done on election night. It could be days, or longer, before we know the results of the election. Even in these polarizing times, we can commit, as Americans, to protecting our Democracy. Together, we stand for an election decided by the people, the right of every registered voter to vote, the importance of counting every vote, and the American tradition of a peaceful transfer of power. Here are our top tips to get through a stressful election: 1. Don't just rely on social media for your information. Check a few different trusted news sources. Make sure the news is true before sharing. 2. Stay calm and remember that the media "calling" a state or a candidate delivering a concession speech or victory speech doesn't matter. The Secretary of State in each state counts and certifies the vote. 3. Trust the U.S. voting system. We can all commit to accepting the results - even if you don't particularly like the result - as Americans have done since 1788. 4. Remember that no matter who wins, people-powered change never stops. People start and win petitions every day on Change.org, no matter who sits in the Oval Office. 5. Sign up for text messages from Change.org, and we'll tell you when your voice is needed to protect our democracy. |
