Many of my patients are asylum-seekers who've come from these immigrant detention facilities. They tell me that in these camps they are kept in overcrowded rooms and given no soap. They can't sleep because the lights are constantly kept on and there are no beds – just cold hard floors. Conditions like these are the perfect setting to spread the flu. Given the devastating flu-related deaths last year, we know that children in immigrant detention are nine times more likely to die of this preventable illness. |
