Josh’s Summer Picks: Games to Pack for the Beach 🏖️

Hey Very Special Friends,

It's beach trip time! If you've been getting our emails for at least a year, you may have heard my family and I go to the beach every year and I always take games to play.

This year, we're going with my BFF of 30ish years and his family, and I'm going to make them playtest a few new things we're making. Those don't make great recommendations for what you should take because they don't currently exist. But I'm also thinking about bringing Onitama, Skyteam, King of Tokyo, Throw Throw Burrito, or Gnome Hollow - all are great!

Since I'm pretty much an expert at this point, here are my suggestions for a great outdoor game night at the beach:

Pick something with heavy components. Card and paper centric stuff can be a disaster at the beach because you can often get wind at night. Onitama is great for that reason and so is Throw, Throw, Burrito because - even though it has cards - it's really just about throwing burritos at each other.

Make sure everyone has a side table. I don't love putting drinks on the game table in general, but outside at the beach, your cold drink is going to sweat like crazy. You really don't want a beverage to spoil your game if you don't even spill it.

Bring stuff you know how to play or teach. Don't waste your vacation learning a crunchy strategy game that requires 45 minutes of reading and another 30 of watching playthroughs. I fully endorse doing that at home - by all means - but if you don't know how to play it or how to teach it to the people with you, maybe leave it at home. Obvious exceptions are things that you can learn in seconds. Our game Yamma is an easy-to-teach, easy-to-learn option that fits the bill.

Anyway, if you have any other great beach gaming hacks, I'd love to hear them. And I hope you're having a great summer!
