Faith, if Elon Musk wants to kill off the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, he should be able to explain why to the American people. That's why I had invited him to Congress this week to speak at a hearing about the CFPB. I wanted to hear him answer our questions about how dismantling the agency will "eliminate fraud" and help working people. No surprise, he did not show up. He doesn't have the guts to defend his actions to Congress. Why? Because he knows he's giving free reign to Wall Street to scam you. What a coward. He says that he's for maximum transparency. If that's so, he should get off Twitter and face real questions from serious people. He says he's for getting rid of fraud. If that's so, he wouldn't be eliminating the agency that mitigates fraud for working people. He and Trump say they're for lowering costs for working people. If that's so, they wouldn't be going after the only financial regulator that is dedicated solely to protecting Americans wallets and that has returned $21 billion dollars to working people who were scammed. His actions contradict his words. He can't defend what he's done. So we have to keep telling the real story of the CFPB. Meanwhile, I realize Elon Musk has a huge ego and doesn't think he has to answer to anybody, but the thing is, the law applies to him, just like it applies to everybody else. And the law is that Congress created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau — and only Congress could actually get rid of it. Not a president acting alone, and not a billionaire acting alone. So here's what we're doing about this: In the courts, we're calling for the law to be enforced. In Congress, we're working to get people like Co-President Elon Musk, OMB Director Russ Vought, and the new CFPB director nominee on record about where their loyalties are. And all over America, at protests, town halls, local organizing events, on the news, and in newsfeeds, we're raising our voices — growing strong, public opposition against what they're doing. We can't let the field open to just Elon Musk and a handful of his hacker minions. Your voices and your stories matter. It was public opposition that saved health care in 2018, and we can grow a strong grassroots movement again to stop them. I need you to stay in this fight. Thanks for being a part of this, Elizabeth |
