Faith, on September 11th, first-responders selflessly put their lives on the line to save others and have been left with persistent and life threatening health problems. Today, the American public has taken a giant step to help them in return. Elected officials in the House and Senate listened to the voice of the people – voices like yours – and voted to permanently fund 9/11 first-responders’ health screenings, medical benefits and compensation. Today, President Trump signed the bill into law. This is a victory that shows the true potential for each of us–people like you–to make critical change. This campaign was launched on Change.org nearly a year ago by John Feal, a 9/11 first-responder himself. John was motivated to push Congress on this funding bill because he’s attended more than 180 funerals since that fateful day. Hundreds of his fellow responders have been diagnosed with cancer, respiratory illness, and other health problems caused by their exposure to debris and toxic chemicals. When he started the petition, our team of campaign experts quickly connected with him to help share his story with millions of people who use Change.org to support the causes they care about. |
Since the launch of John’s campaign, it’s grown massive momentum with more than half a million people signing the petition, coupled with advocacy from Jon Stewart, persistent media coverage, and critical work from other grassroots organizations – all of which helped project a loud, relentless call to "never forget" the heroes who worked on Ground Zero. John’s campaign allowed Americans a way to tell elected officials to coordinate on a solution. And the groundswell of support forced Senators and Representatives to listen. The bill passed with bipartisan support. Winning this campaign today means 9/11 first-responders and their families won’t be left in the lurch with mounting medical bills. The American public has come together to stand up for the heroes who risked so much, and it shows what’s possible when we work together. Thank you for your support on this campaign and all the others that are fighting injustice. We hope you’ll continue to take action on Change.org to help make more victories possible. | |
