Hi Faith — I'm 8 months pregnant with my first child. From talking to other moms I work with at Change, I'm already getting a sense of what a rewarding – and tough – job motherhood can be. I feel so lucky to work here, at a company that gives moms and dads 18 weeks paid parental leave and cares about employees’ work-life balance. But I know that across the U.S., most mothers struggle with balancing work and motherhood. In fact, 1 in 4 moms will return back to work just 10 days after childbirth. Nevermind stats like:
- The U.S. is the only developed nation without a mandatory paid maternity leave policy.
- Every year 700 new mothers will die from ‘preventable’ complications related to childbirth.
Facts like these are widely recognized – and still our country’s current status quo pushes new moms right back to work. But who ever said the status quo was good enough?! Hundreds of thousands of people around the country have said “we can do better!” By signing petitions calling for extended parental leave, citizens are using collective action to pressure corporate CEO’s and lawmakers to offer better policies for new parents – moms and dads – and it’s working. In fact, just days ago the House Ways & Means Committee held its first-ever hearing on paid family leave. Momentum is building as lawmakers take up the issue and we head into the 2020 presidential debates. That’s why today, I invite you to sign the petition started by Erika and PL+US asking TARGET to improve their paid parental leave policy for employees around the country.
With your help, this petition has a real chance to win. How do I know? Because I’ve seen petitions like this win before:
Emily launched a petition on Change.org that was supported by nearly 85,000 people like you. With the undeniable people power behind it, her campaign convinced the NYC Department of Education to rollout a new policy giving full-time teachers 6 weeks of paid parental leave. * * * |
Faith, make your mom proud this Mother’s Day by joining the fight for paid parental leave. Thank you for your support.
