Cut dreadlocks or don't graduate?

Faith — It's 2020 and yet another student is being punished for their hairstyle. DeAndre Arnold's school is basing whether he gets to graduate with his class not on grades, but the length of his hair. Desiree thinks the only thing needing to be cut is this outdated policy. She has started a petition and thousands have already signed. Add your signature so, come graduation day, DeAndre will be able to celebrate his years of hard work with everyone else.

According to the Superintendent of Barbers Hill ISD, "this is how we have done it for the last 30 years, we hold our students to a higher standard and this is why we show a record of great excellence in the district."

While we all strive for excellence in our daily lives, and we too hold our children to a high expectation, what does this have to do with the length of their hair, specifically our boys?

DeAndre Arnold, an exceptional student with a bright future has been told by Barbers Hill ISD board members that he will have to finish out the remainder of the school year in In School Suspension, ISS, and he will not be able to walk in the graduation ceremony with his peers, if he does not cut his dreadlocks to the required length standards set by the school district in the handbook.

DeAndre has been growing his hair for the last 6 years, during those 6 years as a student in BHISD he was told his hair could not go past his collar, touch his ears or go below the eyes.  In order to be in compliance with the rules he put his hair in a ponytail.  Then he was told he could not wear hair accessories because he was a boy, so he could not wear a ponytail because he had nothing to secure it with.  Then they changed the rules saying boys could wear hair accessories but if the hair was not in compliance when let down then even when up in a ponytail it was still in violation.

So when up in a ponytail, the only manner he wears it to school, DeAndre's hair does not go past his collar, does not touch his ears and it isn't in his eyes.  But because WHEN LET DOWN it is not in compliance he is being told ponytail or not he has to cut 5-8 inches off to be in compliance with the rules.

CHANGE THAT SEXIST RULE BHISD IT'S THE 21ST CENTURY AND GENDER DISCRIMINATION WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

On January 13th, 2020 (at approximately 9:45pm), an off-duty Secret Service agent shot and killed a leashed (pet) dog in (Windsor Terrance) Brooklyn, NY.

The unnamed agent turned the corner from East 8th Street onto Caton Place where he came across a man (dog owner) and his girlfriend walking their female Belgian Shepherd.

The dog started barking. This startled the agent who pulled out his gun and shot the dog. The agent claimed the (leashed) dog was unleashed and charged at him.

The Daily News has obtained a photo of the dog's body at the scene with her leash still attached. In response to this photo, a spokesman for the Secret Service said it "will not have further comment."

As tax-paying residents of New York City, we MUST DEMAND that the Secret Service provide further comment; identifying and discharging the unnamed agent and/or detail the disciplinary action that will be taken.

Another "good guy with a gun" - unfit to carry a weapon on our streets.

A barking dog does not justify murder.

Pediatric cancer

Faith — Gary's daughter Naomi has stage 4 brain cancer. While Naomi fights for her life, Gary is fighting mounting medical bills. This means his family is struggling to put food on the table and keep the lights on. Gary doesn't think it should be this way. He has started a petition calling for a government fund that will help families fighting childhood cancer. If his petition wins it would mean families like his could get the financial relief they need. Add your signature today to help families focus on battling cancer, not debt.

Thousands of children are diagnosed with cancer a year. Their parents are the people who stick by their side day in and day out. We have to watch our child suffer and waste away. On top of that, Almost all of us are going through it with little to no help at all. Many parents go without meals, Showers, and are away from our families for months to years at a time. We are begging everyone for help to keep our lights on. To keep a roof over our heads. And, it all depends on how many kind friends we have on social media.

My daughter has stage 4 brain cancer. We are doing everything we can to stay afloat while caring for our daughter in treatments. The costs of treatments alone is enough to completely sink a family into debt.

I am just asking for our Government to set aside a little bit of funds to ease the burden from families like mine. So many of these parents are having to worry about even more. They have to figure out how to pay for burial and funeral costs after they just lost the most precious thing in their lives. It is too much on so many families.

I know most that most people will never have to deal with this. But, Alot of families do. Whether it is in the form of a grant or a loan.. Please do something to ease the burden off of these families. We will not give up. We cant give up for our children. We are all they have. Please, Lets make a difference. Lets get our voices heard. #NaomiStrong #WeareFAMily
